The Iraqi Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom issued a written statement today regarding Leader Abdullah Ocalan’s call for peace and a democratic society. The statement read:

“The language of peace is the language of love, of the people, and of humanity. It affirms that living in peace is a vital part of every society’s life. Without peace, we cannot build a cohesive society or a strong and capable economy that improves individual income.

Leader Ocalan’s call on February 27, 2025, is a clear and explicit initiative addressed to the peoples of the region, stating that conflict and fighting do not build solid societies, but rather create a power structure skilled in looting the community’s wealth.

Disarmament, according to Leader Ocalan’s understanding after more than 40 years of struggle, underscores the importance of political, intellectual, and ideological awareness that he has embodied so that the world may live in peace and away from conflict and wars. Capitalist regimes continue to manufacture and sell various types of destructive weapons in the region, in order to further divide and scatter societies and impose their will upon them.

Leader Ocalan’s initiative has dismantled this brutality and inhumanity. It can be described as a roadmap for solving most of the region's problems and issues, leading to the building of a comprehensive society among all cultures, peoples, and beliefs. At the same time, it is a sophisticated, conscious, and organized initiative, in which weapons were burned voluntarily and willingly to build peace and a democratic society based on the brotherhood of peoples. It also marks a transition from armed struggle to democratic struggle through a serious structure that can define the next phase.

Now the ball is in the Turkish regime’s and Erdoğan’s court. They must speak their word and work towards issuing a general amnesty for all political prisoners in Turkish prisons and move toward releasing Leader Ocalan, so that he may continue his journey in building peace and a democratic society.

From this standpoint, Iraq must take the initiative to engage in serious negotiations with the Turkish side and urge it to withdraw all its forces and military bases from Iraq, as the reason and justification for their presence no longer exist. There is now no longer any justification for the presence of Turkish soldiers on Iraqi soil.

We, at the Iraqi Initiative for Ocalan’s Freedom, stand in solidarity and support with all the peaceful and humanitarian steps taken by Leader Abdullah Ocalan and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). We feel that we are in the same trench with peace, freedom, and democracy. The Turkish Parliament must work to prepare the legal and political ground for all the peoples of Turkey, so that they may struggle through it to achieve democratic politics and live in safety and peace.”
