Iranian authorities issue new sentence against activist Warisha Moradi

According to the “Free Warisha Moradi” campaign, Iranian authorities issued a new ruling against the Kurdish activist, sentencing her to six additional months in prison on charges related to “propaganda against the state.”

According to the information available, the new case was based on messages and texts written and published by Moradi on the anniversary of the popular uprising that swept Iran in 2022.

She was informed of the sentence last week, in a move reflecting the escalating judicial pressure and legal cases filed against her in recent months.

Previously, Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, had issued a ruling against her on charges of “armed rebellion against the state.” However, Branch 9 of the Supreme Court overturned the verdict due to what it described as deficiencies in the investigation and referred the case back to the competent court for retrial.

The Second Criminal Court of the Quds Judicial Complex in Tehran had also previously sentenced the activist to six months in prison during a trial involving four other political prisoners held in Evin Prison.

Warisha was arrested in the city of Sanna in Eastern Kurdistan on 1 August 2023. After two weeks of interrogation in an intelligence detention facility, she was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. During this period, she was reportedly subjected to pressure and torture to force her to make confessions.
