In 2024, more than 4,000 Syrian refugees returned from Jordan

Data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that 4,060 Syrian refugees left Jordan during the first seven months of this year, marking an increase of 57% compared to the same period in 2023. 

The data from the UN Commission indicated the return of 27,091 Syrian refugees from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq to Syria in the first seven months of 2024, compared to 20,061 refugees during the same period in 2023, representing an increase of 35.04%. 

The number of Syrian refugees returning to Syria from various host countries reached 37,552 in 2023, compared to 50,966 in 2022, 35,624 refugees in 2021, 38,235 refugees in 2020, and 94,971 in 2019, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. 

Jordan has hosted more than 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including 625,025 registered Syrian refugees with the commission, as of August 4th of this year. 

The commission also stated that it does not encourage or facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their country at this time, indicating that its position stems from "the fact that the current conditions in Syria are not suitable for their safe return," emphasizing that the decision to return to one's country of origin is entirely voluntary.
