IDPs: safe return begins with liberation of Afrin, Shahba of mercenaries
Forcedly IDPs from Afrin and Shahba once again demanded a safe return to their cities, stressing the need to expel Turkish occupation mercenaries and put an end to ongoing violations. They warned that international powers' persistent indifference to their suffering endangers the prospects of justice and stability in Syria.
Displaced people forced from Afrin and Shahba towns, in Tabqa canton, renewed their demands for safe and secure return to their native place. They urged the concerned authorities to assume their responsibilities, expel Turkish occupation mercenaries from their areas, and halt violations.
Fears of an Unknown Fate
One of the forcibly displaced, Asaad Omar, pointed out that the Damascus regime must seriously act to return the displaced people with serious assurances that they will not be kidnapped or killed. He spoke about the bitter irony faced by the displaced, where most of the displaced people in various Syrian regions have gone back to their homes but Afrin and Shahba people are still under the weight of displacement.
For his part, Suleiman Rasho, a resident of the Sports City center of displaced persons in Tabqa, mentioned the ongoing suffering in the temporary centers, where they endured difficult conditions in winter and now suffer from a new cycle of suffering because of the rise in heat during summer.
Rasho went on to elucidate that talk about peace in Syria seems to be illusions considering the reality that Afrin and Shahba citizens are still enduring forced displacement.
Rasho asked, "How can we have peace if we are part of the Syrian people and are still displaced from our country?"
Displacement of mercenaries is the displaced people's number one demand.
Rasho emphasized that everything else for a safe return begins with the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation mercenaries from Afrin and Shahba, where they are currently conducting kidnappings, tortures, killings, and ransom requests. He noted that their withdrawal is the bare minimum for ensuring the security, honor, and freedom of the residents.
Criticisms of Discrimination in Relief Aid Provision
For her behalf, Salafa Jumaa, a member of the Committee for Displaced Persons from Afrin to Tabqa, appealed to international organizations to abide by humanitarian principles in the disbursement of aid, citing that discrimination can be seen during the provision of support, which aggravates the suffering of the displaced.
Jumaa called for the speedy dispatch of aid immediately to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the makeshift camps with no infrastructure for survival, which risks spreading diseases as summer approaches.
In conclusion, she emphasized that the eviction of mercenaries and guaranteeing the return of displaced people under international assurance are the pillar of Syrian social justice, a pillar demand that must be met by the international community.
