“Our Kurdish language is our identity and our existence, and we want to study in our mother tongue.” With these words, male and female students in Rimelan, Tirbespiye and Derik expressed their rejection of limiting Kurdish-language instruction to three classes per week, stressing their commitment to their right to continue their education in their mother tongue. Iraqi political analyst Abu Mithaq al-Masari believes Iraq is heading in the coming period toward greater stability and further consolidation of its experience in strengthening state institutions and regulating the issue of weapons, while maintaining a balanced policy toward political and democratic currents, alongside regional and international efforts.

International treaties and declarations, including Article 5(1)(c) of the 1960 UNESCO Convention, Article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and Article 4(3) of the 1992 Declaration on Minorities, address the rights to use and learn a language and to receive education in one’s mother tongue. Can the Kurds benefit from these provisions as they continue to demand that Kurdish be included as a language of instruction?

The suspension of generators, following the cutoff of subsidized diesel allocated to operate them, has exacerbated the electricity crisis in Hasakah amid rising temperatures and soaring prices for generator electricity and fuel.
