 After leader Ocalan was abducted on February 15, 1999, he was transferred to Imrali Prison, where he was subjected to strict isolation and a special torture regime designed to torture him psychologically and physically, described as "a life inside a coffin." The torture policy in Imrali has gone through four phases, becoming harsher over time, until all external communication was cut off in 2021.  Women from Derik, in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, have called for an end to the torture and extermination regime imposed on leader Ocalan.
