Germany sentences ISIS mercenary to life for Solingen attack

A German court has sentenced an ISIS mercenary to life imprisonment after he carried out an attack in which three people were killed and others were injured in the city of Solingen in 2024.

The German court in Düsseldorf sentenced 27-year-old Syrian national Issa Al-Hassan, an ISIS affiliate, to life imprisonment after convicting him of killing three individuals and injuring eight others during an attack that targeted a summer festival in Solingen in August 2024.

The court concluded that the mercenary acted with “malicious and vile motives,” noting his direct ties to ISIS. Investigations revealed that he had been in contact with representatives of ISIS leaders prior to the attack and that he targeted festival attendees because they were considered “symbols of Western society,” in addition to motives of revenge linked to Western military operations against ISIS.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack through its propaganda agency, and Al-Hassan admitted to committing the crime during his trial, which was held under tight security measures. The attack resulted in the deaths of three people and serious injuries to others.
