From displaced in school: Songs in remembrance of martyrs

Abdul Rahman Shakro, forcibly displaced from Afrin, has settled with his family in a small room at Martyr Farhan Ali School in Qamishlo after being displaced for the sixth time. In front of ANHA camera, he sang with his voice about the bitterness of displacement.

While playing his tambur, Abdul Rahman Shakro performed the song “Ey Şehîd” (O Martyr), whose lyrics and melody he composed himself, in addition to the song “Axa Me Zêr û Zengîn e” (Our Land Is Gold and Rich) by the band Koma Berxwedan.

Since the age of nine, Shakro has crafted the tambur from wooden sticks. He fell in love with playing the instrument in childhood and continues to play it to this day. Wherever he went during his forced displacement, he always carried his tambur with him.

Abdul Rahman Shakro is a member of the Mesopotamian Movement for Democratic Culture and Art (TEV-ÇAND), a member of the band “Return to Afrin” (Koma Vegera Efrîn), and the founder of the band “Îzdahî,” which was established in 2018 in one of the camps in the Shahba region.

Today, he and his comrades who once held a place within the movement and artistic bands have been dispersed.

Abdul Rahman Shakro is from the Yazidi community. He was displaced for the first time from his village of Faqiran, in Janderis, to the city of Afrin; the second time from Afrin to the Sherawa subdistrict; the third time from Sherawa to Mount Lilon; the fourth time from there to Shahba; the fifth time from Shahba to Raqqa; and this is the sixth time, in which he has been displaced to the city of Qamishlo.
