Flood warnings after Sabkha al-Sayha embankment collapse in Aleppo countryside

The Early Warning and Disaster Management Department of the Syrian Interim Government has urged residents to stay away from water-flooded areas and to safeguard essential documents and belongings in anticipation of any emergency, following the collapse of the earthen embankment of al-Sayha Sabkha.

On Monday, the Department of Early Warning and Disaster Management, affiliated with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, warned of the risk of water reaching several villages in southern rural Aleppo after the al-Sayha Sabkha embankment failure.

It explained that the danger directly threatens the village of Tal al-Aqarib, with the possibility of spreading to Umm al-Karamel, Eastern al-A’shtan, and Kharbat al-Suweihil, calling on residents to exercise maximum caution.

The department confirmed that work is underway to construct a backup earthen barrier to prevent water from reaching populated areas.

It added that field developments may necessitate “partial or full evacuation operations for residents” in the coming period, depending on the level of risk.

Residents were also urged to avoid the sabkha area and flooded areas, secure essential documents and property, and adhere to instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The area had previously witnessed heavy rainfall on April 26, which caused cracks in the Al-Sayha Sabkha embankment near Tal al-Aqarib, leading to the flooding of around 10 hectares of agricultural land and damage to crops.
