First international conference for protection of heritage kicks off in Raqqa

The conference organized by Al-Sharq University and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.

4 tents in the courtyard of Al-Sharq University set up that included the heritage of the region’s components, “a tent for the Arab heritage, a tent for the Kurdish heritage, a tent for the Assyrian heritage, and a tent for the Armenian component.”

Participating in the first international conference are components of NE Syria, including Kurds, Arabs, Armenians, and Assyrians.

Personalities from outside Syria, such as Egypt, Amsterdam, and Britain, will join the conference via Zoom.

The conference activities began with a minute of silence in honor of the souls of the martyrs. On its first day, the conference is scheduled to discuss many topics across two sessions.

According to the conference program, the first session includes discussing “the impact of armed conflicts on archaeological sites, infringements on human cultural heritage during the Syrian crisis, and the responsibility to preserve tangible and intangible heritage.”

The second session discussed “electronic trade in cultural property in Syria, illicit trafficking in cultural property in the Arab world and outside it, analysis of the method of the crime of smuggling antiquities across borders to and from Syria, how Internet archiving can provide a space for displaced people to tell their oral stories.”

The first international conference is scheduled to continue for 3 consecutive days.
