Final lists for electoral bodies in Hasaka and Kobani announced amid criticism from Kurdish parties

Twenty-four Kurdish political parties yesterday condemned what they described as attempts to perpetuate policies of marginalization against the Kurds by limiting Kurdish representation to only four seats. They also expressed reservations about the mechanism for forming the Syrian People's Assembly, which began with the release of voter lists.

Hours earlier, the High Elections Committee for the Syrian People's Assembly released the final list of names of members of the electoral bodies in the Hasaka governorate, which includes Hasaka, Qamishlo, and Derik, in addition to the Kobani district.

According to the decision issued by the High Elections Committee, the initial lists released on May 18 (two days prior) underwent a final review before their official approval.

The committee set the deadline for submitting candidacy applications for the indirect elections to the People's Assembly in the electoral districts, starting today, May 20, 2026, in Kobani, Hasaka, Qamishlo, and Derik.

This development comes less than a week after the announcement of the formation of subcommittees in those areas, amid local questions about the mechanism for selecting members of the electoral body, the nomination criteria, and the speed with which the lists were finalized within such a short timeframe.

According to the temporary electoral system, the electoral body is a group of individuals chosen within each electoral district according to specific conditions and criteria stipulated in Decree No. (143) of 2025. Subcommittees oversee the preparation of these lists and verify the eligibility of the candidates before submitting them to the High Committee for approval.

The role of the members of the electoral body is to participate in the selection of members of the Syrian Parliament within their respective electoral districts.

According to the announcement, the number of names on the electoral bodies in Hasaka reached 172, while the number of members in Derik reached 104, in Qamishlo 251, and in Kobani 128, with a clear absence of female representation.
