Feyli Kurds call for expanded parliamentary representation in Iraq

The Feyli Kurds are calling for greater representation in the Iraqi Council of Representatives to ensure their voice is heard and to address long-standing issues, including forced displacement, confiscation of property, and loss of civil documentation.

In Hawler, Feyli Kurds on Saturday criticized their limited representation in the Iraqi parliament, stressing that allocating only one quota seat does not reflect their population, which they say exceeds two million people.

A meeting was held in Hawler bringing together Feyli Kurdish representatives from the Federal Region of Southern Kurdistan’s governorates (Hawler, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok) as well as from Baghdad and the provinces of Wasit and Diyala, under the slogan “Our Unity is Our Strength,” to discuss the legal and political challenges they face, according to Roj News.

During the meeting, the head of the “Feyli House” organization in the region, Majid Abdulrahman Al-Mandalawi, said that the low level of parliamentary representation for Feylis is an obstacle to achieving their demands and restoring rights that were confiscated before 2003.

Al-Mandalawi also called on Kurdish political forces to support efforts to unify the Feyli community, stressing that they have historically been targeted due to their Kurdish identity despite their sectarian affiliation. He added that this requires a comprehensive national solution to end what he described as a long-standing process of “identity erasure” affecting thousands of families.
