Imam of Sayyida Zainab shrine assassinated, Higher Islamic Shiite Council calls for revealing perpetrators

On Saturday, the Higher Islamic Shiite Council in Lebanon condemned the assassination of the Imam of the Sayyida Zainab shrine in the Damascus countryside, Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, describing the act as a “cowardly criminal operation” aimed at stirring sedition, and calling for the perpetrators to be punished.

In its official statement, the council explained that al-Mansour, a member of the scholarly body of the Shiite sect in Syria, was killed after a grenade was thrown at his car in the Damascus countryside, expressing deep sorrow and grief over the incident.

The statement stressed the need to identify the perpetrators, expressing the council’s expectation that the Syrian Ministry of Interior would reveal the details of the crime and impose the harshest penalties on those responsible.

It also noted that the crime falls within attempts to target religious and social figures aimed at undermining societal stability and “provoking strife.”

The statement called for taking necessary measures to protect members of the Shiite community in Syria, similar to all other components, in order to preserve the unity and stability of the Syrian people.

The council concluded by reaffirming its constant commitment to Syria’s unity and stability, and offered condolences over the death of the Imam of Farhan Hassan al-Mansour in Damascus countryside

Al-Mansour was assassinated yesterday when unknown individuals threw a hand grenade into his car near Safir Al-Zahraa Hotel, after he left the Sayyida Zainab shrine.
