father awaits return of his detained son…story of fighter his family is waiting for

In a voice heavy with anxiety and anticipation, Nayef Hussein tells the story of his son, Ali Askar, a fighter in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces who joined the resistance years ago and is now detained by the interim government in Syria in Aleppo prison.

Ali Askar joined the People’s Protection Units YPG at the time of their formation in late 2011, even before their official announcement. He took part in most of the liberation battles against ISIS mercenaries, starting with the battle of Serekaniye/ Ras al-Ain. He was wounded four times during his journey defending his people while confronting attacks.

Nayef Hussein explains that his son had been ill recently, noting that he underwent surgery, but the surgical site had not fully healed. Despite this, Ali did not withdraw; instead, he headed to Deir Hafer when the attacks began. They remained in constant contact with him, and he reassured them that the security situation was stable.

Nayef Hussein continues recounting the story: “On the last day before the withdrawal from Deir Hafer, we spoke with him. He said that clashes had taken place, then stopped along with the shelling, and a truce and an agreement for withdrawal at seven in the morning had been reached.”

“They betrayed our sons”

Hussein stresses that what followed was unexpected. The next day, contact with him was lost. With clear bitterness, he describes what happened: “Despite the agreement, they betrayed our sons. They betrayed them, and now they are in detention.”

He adds, referring to international law: “When a truce is reached, the fighting should stop, and what happened should not have occurred.”

Hussein obtained information about his son from one of his friends, saying: “One of his companions from the Zaytouniya neighborhood was released and told us that he had been with my son Ali in the same cell in Aleppo prison, and that his health condition is unstable due to the surgery.”

A whole family awaits him… calls for the release of detainees

Hussein confirms that Ali is married and has three children, and that his wife and children are waiting for him. He concluded by demanding the release of detainees and no delay in this matter, saying: “We want the release of our detainees and our fighters, the fighters of this people and this land.”

It is worth noting that Nayef Hussein has another son who was killed, named Warshin, who was a fighter in the People’s Protection Units and died in 2015 in the Suluk area south of the city of Serekaniye.
