Drug-smuggling attempts foiled at Jordanian-Iraqi-Syrian border

The Jordanian Armed Forces said its forces in the Eastern Military Zone foiled four attempts yesterday to smuggle large quantities of narcotics using balloons guided across one of its border fronts.

The Jordanian Armed Forces said border guard units detected the balloons at several locations and managed to intercept and bring them down inside Jordanian territory, seizing their cargo, which was estimated at around half a million drug pills.

It said the operation was carried out in coordination with military security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, while the seized items were handed over to the relevant authorities to complete legal procedures.

The Eastern Military Zone is located along Jordan’s borders with both Syria and Iraq. However, the Jordanian military statement did not explicitly identify the country from which the balloons were launched.

The operation comes amid repeated smuggling attempts across Jordan’s borders, particularly along the northern border with Syria. The Jordanian Armed Forces have previously announced that they foiled drug-smuggling attempts using various methods, including drones and guided balloons.
