Dozens of people killed by mine explosions in Syria during August

At least 18 people, including 11 children and three women, were killed and approximately 35 others injured in August across Syria as a result of landmine and cluster bomb explosions left over from the war, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The incidents varied between explosions during grazing, farming, or daily commutes, as well as inside homes and on public roads, highlighting the continued danger to civilians in the absence of adequate mine clearance efforts or awareness-raising.

Geographical Distribution of Victims:

- Transitional Government Areas: 14 killed, including 7 children and 2 women, in addition to 37 injured.

- Autonomous Administration Areas: 3 killed, including 2 children and a woman, and 1 injured.

- Areas controlled by the Turkish occupation's mercenaries, the "National Army": 2 children.

Some Notable Incidents:

- At the beginning of the month, 3 children were killed in Aleppo and Idlib, and another child was killed in Raqqa, while 2 civilians were injured in the Homs countryside.

- On August 7, a woman and her two children were killed, and the rest of the family was injured, by a landmine explosion in the western Damascus countryside.

- On August 8, a cluster bomb explosion killed a child and injured four other children in Palmyra.

- On August 21 and 22, a child was killed in the Homs countryside, and 2 women were killed in Deir ez-Zor and Hasaka, while 6 civilians, including children and women, were injured.

On August 23, three women were injured when a landmine exploded in a vehicle carrying vegetables in the western Daraa countryside, and a child was killed in the southern Idlib countryside while grazing sheep

Extended toll from the end of 2024:

- From December 8, 2024, to August 2025, 589 people, including 160 children and 40 women, were killed by mines and explosive remnants of war in Syria, and 632 people were injured, including 270 children and 17 women.
