Displaced women from Serê Kaniyê demand return home before winter

The first group of displaced people from Serê Kaniyê returned to their lands and villages, but those occupying their homes prevented many of them from entering the city and their villages.

Thousands of displaced families have been living in camps for years under difficult humanitarian conditions. They are calling for a safe return to their lands and homes and for the reconstruction of villages destroyed during the years of displacement.

“We Demand a Safe Return to Our Lands and Homes”

Amal Ibrahim, from the village of Al-Arisha and currently living in Washokani Camp, said: “I speak on behalf of all displaced men and women in Syria. We demand security and safety, and a safe return to our lands and homes, along with everything needed to ensure a dignified life for us.”

Amal said they had been living in makeshift camps for seven years, unable to sleep or eat properly and living in constant fear, in addition to the diseases spreading throughout the camp.

She explained that their homes in the village had been completely destroyed, calling on the transitional government to intervene and help rebuild the damaged homes so that displaced families can return.

Our Children Have Been Deprived of Schooling and Education

On schools and education, Amal said their children had been deprived of schooling because of displacement. She called for their return to their homes as soon as possible before winter arrives.

Amal Ibrahim added that keeping displaced people in camps under such conditions was increasing their suffering, particularly with winter approaching, which makes life in makeshift camps even more difficult.

More Than 15 Villages Completely Destroyed

Qamra Abdo, originally from the village of Al-Aboush in the Serê Kaniyê area and now living in Washokani Camp after being displaced from her village during attacks by Turkey and its mercenaries in 2019, said: “More than 15 villages across the area have been completely destroyed. We have received neither compensation nor any assistance.”

“We want to return to our lands before winter so that we can at least build a room where we can stay during this harsh season,” Qamra Abdo added.

Displaced People Face Harsh Humanitarian Conditions

Qamra Abdo noted that displaced people are enduring harsh humanitarian conditions and are deprived of basic necessities. A displaced person cannot afford to see a doctor or buy medication, she said.

Displaced people in Washokani Camp continue to call for a return to their villages and lands and for conditions that would enable them to rebuild their homes, after years of living in camps under difficult humanitarian and living conditions.
