Director of Sweida bakeries: Mesopotamia shipment helps resume bread production

The Mesopotamia Association sent a humanitarian aid shipment to Sweida and the southern region, in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting residents across various Syrian areas.

Upon arrival in Sweida, the Director of Bakeries in the southern Syrian province, Moeen Fouad Shalhouf, said that bakeries in the governorate have long been suffering from a severe shortage of flour, which has forced them to halt operations repeatedly.

Shalhouf explained that the crisis stems from the decline in flour and fuel supplies and the irregular delivery of shipments from relevant authorities and international organizations, adding that the available quantities “cover only about half of the daily demand for bread production.”

He confirmed that several bakeries had stopped operating for more than three consecutive days due to the shortage of essential materials, leading to a sharp drop in the production of bread, which is the main staple food for residents.

Shalhouf noted that on October 6, the Mesopotamia Association sent a relief shipment containing 50 tons of flour to the governorate, which was distributed among bakeries to ensure the continuation of bread production and helped resume operations.

The association, in turn, stated that the shipment was sent in coordination with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and under the supervision of the Directorates of Social Affairs and Labor in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, as part of its efforts to mitigate the impact of shortages in essential goods across Syrian regions.
