Christians in Jazira mark Christmas with mass, prayers for peace

Today, 25 December, marks Christmas Day, one of the most significant Christian holidays, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ and embodying the values of love and peace.

Saint Mar George Cathedral in the center of Hasakah city witnessed a large turnout this morning, as worshippers arrived from the early hours to perform prayers and religious rituals specific to the occasion, amid the ringing of church bells.

The Mass included readings from the Holy Gospel and Christmas hymns, in an atmosphere of reverence and devotion. The church was adorned with Christmas decorations and a lit Christmas tree, alongside the lighting of candles symbolizing light and hope.

Participants offered prayers for peace and security in Syria, stressing their commitment to the values of coexistence and love among different religious and ethnic communities, and the importance of promoting a culture of tolerance and shared living.

The celebration concluded in an atmosphere of joy and reassurance, with attendees exchanging greetings and emphasizing that the values of Christmas will remain a bridge of love among the people of the same homeland.

Internal Security Forces had taken security measures to secure churches and their surroundings, ensuring the safety of worshippers and the smooth conduct of religious rituals in a safe and stable environment.

Churches that celebrate Christmas on 25 December include the Catholic Church and most Protestant churches, as well as some Orthodox churches that follow the Gregorian calendar. Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar celebrate on 7 January, while the Armenian Church celebrates on 6 January.

Qamishlo

In the city of Qamishlo, Christians celebrated at the Church of Mar Yaqoub of the Chaldeans and at the Church of Our Lady Mary of the Syriac Orthodox.
