British Parliamentary petition urges Govt. to act to protect Kurds, halt attacks

More than seventy members of Parliament and the House of Lords from across the political spectrum in the United Kingdom, including the ruling Labour Party and the main opposition Conservative Party sent a letter to British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, warning of the real and imminent threat of violence facing the Kurdish people in Syria and urging the government to take immediate measures to protect them.

In their letter, MPs and peers stated: “This country is indebted to the countless young Kurdish men and women who bravely resisted ISIS terrorism for years,” stressing that taking tangible steps at this critical time is the least that can be done in recognition of those significant sacrifices.

The signatories added that the current situation in Kurdish regions of Syria requires swift and effective international action to protect civilians, ensure stability, and prevent a new humanitarian catastrophe in the area.

They explained that the steps required from the British government should include intensified political and diplomatic pressure to stop the attacks and to secure the necessary protection for the region’s residents.

It is worth noting that the MPs and Lords who signed the letter belong to the ruling Labour Party, as well as the Conservative Party and other opposition parties, reflecting a broad political consensus within Britain on the necessity of protecting Kurds and their regions in Syria.
