Baghdad -Washington hold talks on prisoners transferred from Syria

Iraqi Minister of Justice Khalid Shwani discussed today with the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Stephen Fagan, the issue of foreign prisoners and legal and judicial cooperation.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Justice said: "Minister of Justice Khalid Shwani received the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Stephen Fagan. During the meeting, the two sides discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, foremost among them the issue of foreign prisoners transferred from Syria to Iraq, as well as ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the legal and judicial fields."

The statement added that "the meeting addressed mechanisms for cooperation and coordination regarding the issue of foreign prisoners and ways of handling it in accordance with the legal frameworks and established procedures, in a manner consistent with Iraqi laws and international obligations."

According to the statement, Stephen Fagan expressed "his thanks and appreciation to the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice for the role they played in the process of transferring foreign prisoners from Syria to Iraq," stressing that "the United States of America is working in coordination with its partners to provide the necessary support to Iraq on this issue, in a way that contributes to strengthening joint efforts between Baghdad and Washington."
