Sanhareeb Barsoum, Co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party, assessed the Syrian situation one year after the fall of the Baath regime, stating that the current phase has not fulfilled Syrians’ aspirations to build a democratic, pluralistic state, despite some openness on the external front.

Barsoum said that the current government has failed to address Syria’s internal situation, noting that the country has witnessed serious incidents, crimes, and grave violations, particularly in the coastal region and in Swedia, in addition to attacks targeting Christians.

He described the overall assessment of the internal situation as unsatisfactory, contrasting it with the transitional government’s focus on improving foreign relations and easing sanctions, even if that comes at the expense of internal stability.

He added that the goals of the Syrian revolution namely ending authoritarianism and building a decentralized democratic state that guarantees the rights of all components have not yet been achieved. He pointed out that crucial decisions, such as the formation of the government and the drafting of the constitutional declaration, were taken without national consensus or genuine partnership.

Regarding the recent massacres and violations, Barsoum explained that a mentality of exclusion and monopolization of power leads to the repetition of disasters, as occurred in previous eras. He emphasized that the solution lies in recognizing all components as genuine partners in building Syria.

With regard to negotiations with Damascus, he noted that no tangible progress has been made, except for ceasefires that were repeatedly violated, holding the Syrian transitional government and foreign interventions particularly Turkey responsible for obstructing agreements.

Barsoum affirmed that the autonomous administration project has proven successful in consolidating democracy, pluralism, and coexistence, achieving stability and defeating ISIS mercenaries, adding that this model is applicable across the entire Syrian geography.

He concluded by stressing that Syria’s future must be built by the will of its people through genuine partnership, away from exclusion and foreign interventions, leading to a unified democratic Syria that includes all of its components.
