Artists in Al-Darbasiyah call for wide participation in Newroz 2026

This year, Newroz is celebrated under the slogan: “Let us make Newroz a holiday for the freedom of Leader Apo and the democratic unity of the Kurds,” across 7 centers in Rojava, including the cities of Aleppo and Damascus, in addition to Al-Darbasiyah.

The main celebration in Al-Darbasiyah will take place this year in the village of Golbistan, while secondary events and festivities have been ongoing in the city’s neighborhoods and countryside since March 14.

In this context, artist Abdulrahman Barafi confirmed that this year’s Newroz carries deep symbolic meaning, as it is rooted in values of liberation and victory over tyranny. He pointed out that the origins of the holiday trace back to the story of Kawa the Blacksmith, who lit the fire as a declaration of victory—turning the flame into a lasting symbol of freedom.

For her part, artist Hojin Herz described Newroz as a “spark of humanity’s light,” considering it a transition from darkness to light. She added that its symbolism has been strengthened through great sacrifices, from historical figures to contemporary martyrs, giving this year’s celebration a special dimension in commemorating them.

She also noted that Newroz celebrations in Rojava have continued for 14 years under exceptional circumstances, stressing that this year’s version will be marked by commemorating a number of martyrs by lighting the flame in their names.

She emphasized that this occasion also represents a message of defiance against attempts to prevent celebrations or weaken society’s will, highlighting the prominent role of Kurdish women in reviving such occasions and expressing their presence, especially during the activities of March.

In this context, the artists renewed their call for broad public participation in this year’s celebrations, as they represent a reaffirmation of the values of freedom and dignity, and a message of unity in the face of challenges.
