"Ansar al-Sunna" claims responsibility for St. Elias Church bombing, threatens more

The "Saraya Ansar al-Sunna" group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing that took place inside the St. Elias Church in Damascus, which resulted in the martyrdom and injury of dozens.

“Saraya Ansar al-Sunna”,(Brigade of Sunni Supporters), claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing inside St. Elias Church in the Al-Dweila’a neighborhood, south of Damascus, which resulted in the martyrdom of at least 25 people and left 63 others injured.

In a statement published via the group’s social media platforms, they announced that the attacker was identified as "Mohammed Zain al-Abidin Abu Othman." The group stated that the operation was carried out in response to what it described as "provocation by the Christians of Damascus," and threatened further attacks.

The St. Elias Church bombing occurred on Sunday during a mass attended by dozens of worshippers. A suicide bomber entered the church and detonated himself, causing a large number of casualties and sparking a fire in the building.

Photos and videos from the scene showed extensive destruction to the main hall and the church courtyard.
