20 killed in Syria’s interior, coastal regions during January

Twenty people were killed in areas under the control of the Syrian Interim Government during January, as a result of escalating violence that included shootings, executions, and assaults, amid widespread security breakdown.

Syria witnessed a troubling rise in acts of violence and killings throughout the month of January, against the backdrop of ongoing security chaos and the absence of accountability, resulting in dozens of casualties under varying circumstances.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least 20 people were killed during the month, including one woman, due to incidents involving direct gunfire, targeted executions, armed assaults, as well as run-over incidents and victims of earlier explosions. These cases were recorded in Latakia, Homs, Hama, Rural Damascus, and the city of Damascus.

In Latakia, four people were killed, three men and a child, while two men were killed in Rural Damascus. Homs governorate recorded the highest toll, with 11 people killed, including one woman.

In Hama, two men were killed, while one killing was recorded in the city of Damascus, where a man lost his life.

These developments point to a dangerous escalation in violence and a growing pattern of killings driven by various motives, amid continued impunity, raising increasing fears among residents over the deteriorating security situation in areas controlled by the Syrian Interim Government.
