Activist stresses the development of a project to make As-Suwayda protests successful

As-Suwayda protests that erupted since August 20 brought a new perspective to the level of awareness and understanding that Syrian women have reached after decades of injustice, oppression, and violation of rights and freedoms practiced by successive regimes in Syria.

The female presence has been remarkable since the outbreak of protests in Suwayda. They participated in the front rows and chanted for women’s freedom and dignity, and finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis that has been ongoing for more than 12 years.

A movement based on a project that does not fail

Women from other Syrian regions also expressed their solidarity with the demands of the male and female protesters in Suwayda. In this context; ANHA's agency conducted an interview with Silvart Salloum, a feminist activist and civil engineer from the city of Aleppo, who considered that the protests that broke out in Suwayda were “the result of pressure.”

Silvart stressed the necessity of having a project to make these protests successful, and said: “With regard to the peaceful movement that broke out in Suwayda, Syria, in which women stand in the front rows of the protests resulting from pressures, I agree with her and I am not against this matter, but in the end, change must not be through the movement.” Popular expressions of emotions, there must be a project and a plan on the ground in the first place.”

She showed ways to avoid the failure of these protests like their predecessors, as stated by activist Silvart, “When I demand change and partnership, I must have a project with specific points, and not just by saying, but by working on it. I must be careful not to fall into the mistakes committed in the protests.” The previous one ended in failure, and I must also turn to peaceful solutions and not just call for change.”

Rejecting the interference of external agendas

She warned against allowing external agendas to interfere in the protests that erupted in Suwayda, pointing out that “advocacy is everyone’s work, and as a result of previous movements, which were peaceful, external agendas interfered and turned into a form of violence. Therefore, when carrying out any popular movement, it must be the result of a study.” And a plan and a period of time until the standards I demand from the party I want to change are achieved.”

Silvart found in awareness the ideal solution to achieve what she wanted, and she said: “Our participation, as Syrian women, in this process must be through sufficient and complete maturity, acting diplomatically and intelligently, and participating in the plan.”

'With awareness we must apply our thoughts'

The feminist activist, Silvart Salloum, explained that women’s participation should not be limited only to raising banners and calling for change, but rather, as Silvaert said, this should be done consciously, “Each of us has an idea and a principle that we want to implement within the society in which we exist. We must be partners.” First and foremost, as women’s fraternities for one Syria.”
