Euphrates lakes lose 85% of strategic reserve

An administrator in Rojava Dam (Tishreen) confirmed that the Turkish occupation’s cutting off of the water of the Euphrates River led to the depletion of the water in the dams’ lakes and the loss of the strategic reserve of the Euphrates lakes by more than 85%, which negatively affects the construction of the dams, drinking water and electricity generation.

“The Turkish state’s policy of cutting off water has led to negative results on the region in general, causing difficulty in obtaining drinking water and stopping the work of the dams for long hours on a daily basis,  turning rivers into swamp lead to the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases, in addition to the damage to agricultural seasons and the reduction of cropped areas as region’s dependence on water resources, as this led to a direct impact on food security, the decline in agricultural and economic production in the region due to the migration of young people and manpower, "Hammoud al-Hamadin, the administrator of the Tishreen Dam stated to the Autonomous Administration’s official website.

He added, "The reality of the Euphrates River has become in a catastrophic situation nearly 30 months ago, due to the Turkish side continuing to reduce the water supply to less than 200 cubic meters per second, as the allocations for the normal region amount to 500 cubic meters per second, which led to the depletion of the water of the dams' lakes and the loss of water."

The strategic reserve of the Euphrates lakes is more than 85% in the Tishreen Dam, as this negatively affected the construction of dams, drinking water and electric power generation, as only two turbines are now running for 7 hours per day and the electricity generation capacity is low from 107 megawatts to 75 megawatts, and a loss of 35% of the total electric power generation.

He stressed that the inaction of the United Nations, human rights organizations and guarantor countries has exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the region, directly affecting food security and threatening the lives of nearly 7 million people in the region, as the region is completely dependent on the water supply of the Euphrates River and the region’s dams, so the United Nations and organizations must be called upon human rights organizations to intervene to stop Turkey's hostile practices and provide the region with water allocations of 500 cubic meters.
