Russia uses its veto against extending the entry of aid into Syria through Bab al-Hawa crossing

Russia used its veto power in the UN Security Council to prevent the issuance of a resolution extending for 9 months the mechanism for the introduction of humanitarian aid to Syria, the day after the expiry of the mechanism that allowed the passage of aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, which is occupied by Turkey and its mercenaries.

This is while the United Nations, humanitarian relief organizations and many members of the Security Council called for extending this mechanism for a year, Russia insisted on extending it for only six months and used its veto against a compromise proposed by Switzerland and Brazil, to extend the mechanism for 9 months.

The Russian delegate to the UN Security Council, Vassily Nebenzia, said: "The mechanism for bringing aid across the border into Syria is a provocation and a theatricality."

"The West is only interested in using the aid transport mechanism to transport terrorists," Nebenzia added.

He continued, "Everything the West talks about is hypocrisy, and the Syrian government has opened two humanitarian crossings," adding, "Any mechanism that will allow the passage of terrorists is a violation of Syria's sovereignty and integrity."

The Russian delegate also said: "The problem lies in the content of the decision to extend the aid, not the time period for it."

In addition, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, said: "The delivery of aid across the border must respect the sovereignty of Syria."

He continued, "We call for avoiding double standards and not politicizing humanitarian issues."

On the other hand, the British representative to the Security Council said: "The delivery of aid to Syria should not be linked to Russia's decision."

It also stated: "Since 2014, Russia has restricted the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria."
