Jeddah summit calls for effective Arab role to resolve Syrian crisis

Today, the work of the thirty-second Arab summit began in the Saudi city of Jeddah, in the presence of Bashar al-Assad, who arrived in Saudi Arabia to participate in the summit, two weeks after the Arab League agreed to return Syria's seat after nearly 12 years.

The final statement dealt with a series of important issues related to the Arab world, including the situation in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Libya and Sudan, in addition to the Palestinian cause.

With regard to the Syrian crisis, the Jeddah Declaration stressed the need to intensify Arab efforts aimed at helping Syria overcome its crisis, and to enhance the appropriate conditions for the return of Syrian refugees, at a time when Arab leaders expressed their hope that Syria's return to its seat in the Arab League would support the stability of this country.

The Jeddah Declaration also emphasized the necessity of stopping foreign interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries, respecting the values and cultures of others, respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states, and refusing to support the formation of armed groups and factions outside the scope of state institutions.

The declaration also focused on the importance of intensifying efforts to reach a just settlement of the Palestinian cause and supporting international and regional efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, with the support of the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen to establish security and stability.

On the situation in Sudan, the final statement indicated that the meetings of the Sudanese parties in Jeddah are considered a step that can be built upon to end the crisis, stressing the rejection of any external interference in Sudanese affairs.
