Jeddah meeting did not resolve Syria's return to Arab League

The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq agreed, during a consultative meeting in Jeddah to take more measures that would contribute to stabilizing the situation throughout the Syrian territories according the Saudi SPA agency.

 "Consultations took place and views were exchanged on the efforts made to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, which would end all its repercussions and preserve Syria's unity, security, stability, and Arab identity, and return it to its Arab surroundings, in a way that achieves good for its people.” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said.

The ministers agreed on: " the importance of resolving the humanitarian crisis and providing an appropriate environment for aid to reach all regions in Syria, creating the necessary conditions for the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons to their areas, ending their suffering, and enabling them to return safely to their homes in addition to: “taking more measures that would contribute to stabilizing the situation throughout the Syrian territories.”

The ministers stressed: "The importance of combating terrorism in all its forms and organizations, and combating drug smuggling and trafficking," in addition to, The importance of state institutions preserving Syria's sovereignty over its lands to end the presence of armed militias in it, and foreign interference in Syrian internal affairs."

The ministers stressed, "the political solution is the only one to the Syrian crisis, and the importance of having an Arab leadership role in efforts to end the crisis, setting up the necessary mechanisms for this role, and intensifying consultations among Arab countries to ensure the success of these efforts." Several Arab countries cut off diplomatic relations with Damascus, and the League of Arab States suspended Syria's membership following the outbreak of protests suppressed by the Syrian government forces in 2011.

The Damascus government had hoped to return to the League of Arab States, through this meeting, which was preceded by a visit by the Foreign Minister of the Damascus government, Faisal al-Miqdad, to the Saudi capital.

 However, the statement refers to stopping the suspension of Syria's membership in the League as several Arab countries oppose this endeavor.
