Transparency International: Syria, Turkey are most corrupt countries

Syria is the worst, the United Arab Emirates performs the best when it comes to combatting corruption in the Middle East and North Africa region, while Turkey has witnessed a further decline of its score from 96 to 101 in global rankings, according to Transparency International report.

The organization issued the Corruption Perceptions Index for the year 2022, and reviewed the record of transparency and anti-corruption in 180 countries, as most countries in the Middle East and North Africa declined in their ranking, as the region average reached a new low. In its report, the organization indicated no country has registered a significant improvement on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in the last decade

The scores of Middle East and North African countries in combating corruption, from lowest to highest, are as follows:

Syria - Yemen - Libya - Iraq - Lebanon - Iran - Egypt - Algeria - Morocco - Tunisia - Kuwait - Sultanate of Oman - Bahrain - Jordan - Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - State of Qatar - Israel - United Arab Emirates.

The Index categorizes Turkey under the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region that also includes Russia and Ukraine. Turkey landed at 101st place in the global rankings, falling from 96th and dropping 2 points from 2021. Transparency International said the country has been witnessing a “significant decline” in combating corruption over the past years.
