UNESCO condemns killing ANHA's correspondent Essam Abdullah

The United Nations UNESCO condemned targeting of ANHA correspondent, Issam Abdullah by the Turkish occupation, but it did not mention the name of the Turkish occupation state.

On Thursday, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Audrey Azoulay, condemned the targeting of ANHA correspondent in Dêrik, Issam Abdullah, who was martyred while he was covering the Turkish attacks on the village of Taql Bqil of Dêrik.

Issam Abdullah, was martyred on the night of 19-20 November, while covering the destruction caused by a Turkish air strike in the village.

In a statement published on the official UNESCO website, Audrey stressed the need for states to protect journalists.

Audrey said, "I condemn the killing of journalist Issam Abdullah. It is the duties of journalists to provide news and information of interest to the public, including coverage of dangerous environments their safety and protection must be ensured."

However, the Director-General of the international organization did not mention in her statement the name of Turkey, which caused the martyrdom of ANHA reporter and 10 other citizens in the same place.

The statement also stated that UNESCO "is working to enhance the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and coordination of the implementation of the United Nations Action Plan on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity."
