Panorama of world's events in 2021

The world witnessed many important events in 2021, but the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, escalation of tension over Ukraine, deterioration of the Turkish economy and the Iranian nuclear negotiations, remain the highlights of this year.

The year 2021 witnessed the fall of leaders and parties from power and the arrival of others, while the Turkish economy continued to deteriorate, Turkish lira depreciation at 14.75, while crises and wars continued around the world at a time when climate change threatens the world’s population with more severe waves of violence.

Lifting the embargo on Qatar and Biden became President of the United States

January 4 - The Gulf parties reached an agreement on lifting the blockade on Qatar, one day before the Al-Ula summit in Saudi Arabia.

January 6 - Rioters who support US President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election storm the Capitol.

January 7 - The US Senate and House of Representatives ratify Democratic candidate Joe Biden for the US presidency.

January 17 - Russian police stop the Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, on February 2, where a Moscow court ordered his imprisonment for three and a half years, while he went on a hunger strike on March 31 to prevent civilian doctors from visiting him and ended it on April 23.

January 20 - Joe Biden is appointed the 46th President of the United States.

January 26 - First phone call between new US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Escalation of attacks on US military bases in Iraq

February 5 - Mohamed El Manfi wins the presidency of the Libyan Presidential Council while Abdel Hamid Dabaiba wins the premiership.

February 16 - A US military base was attacked by a missile in southern Kurdistan, killing a civilian contractor and wounding five other people, including an American soldier

March 2 - The European Union imposes new personal sanctions on Russia because of repression of opponent Alexei Navalny and his supporters.

February 28 - Tehran and Ankara demand their ambassadors to come to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to protest against the exchanged statements regarding the Turkish presence in Iraq.

March 3 - Rockets fall on Ain Al-Assad Air Base in Iraq, which hosts US and coalition forces.

March 10 - Joe Biden's administration imposes the first sanctions on Iranian officials.

March 17 - US President Biden says he believes his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is a "murderer."

March 23 - About 6.5 million Israelis go to the polling stations to vote in the early and fourth legislative elections in two years.

A coup attempt in Jordan and the start of nuclear negotiations

April 3 - An attempted coup in Jordan and security arrested the former head of the royal court, Basem Ibrahim Awadallah, in addition to Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, the member of the royal family. The security services asked the half-brother of King Abdullah to desist from acts targeting the security and stability of the country.

April 5 - Russian President Vladimir Putin gives his final approval to a law allowing him to serve as president for two additional six-year terms, giving himself the possibility to remain in power until 2036.

April 6 - The first round of nuclear negotiations kicks off in Vienna. Six failed rounds took place and began on November 29, while the seventh round is still ongoing.

April 6 - Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tasks Benjamin Netanyahu with forming a government, and after his failure, Yair Lapid was tasked with forming a new government on May 5.

Ship war between Israel and Iran

April 7 - Iran confirms that its ship, "Saviz", was slightly damaged by an explosion targeting it in the Red Sea.

April 10 - Iran announces the commissioning of two new series of modernized centrifuges that enable uranium enrichment more quickly.

April 11 - A nuclear facility enriching uranium in the center of the country was attacked and on April 12, Iran accused Israel of the attack

April 13 - Iran is accused of being responsible for a missile attack targeting a merchant ship of an Israeli company in the Gulf waters off the coast of the UAE.

April 15 - America announces a series of financial sanctions against Russia and expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats in response to information attacks and interference in the 2020 presidential elections. The next day, Russia responded by expelling diplomats and banning senior American officials from entering its territory.

April 17 - The International Atomic Energy Agency confirms that Iran has started enriching uranium to a purity of 60% in its reactor at Natanz facility.

April 18 - The Iraqi military air base of Balad, which houses US soldiers, was targeted by five missiles.

April 24 - US President Joe Biden recognizes the Armenian genocide, who is the first US president to describe the killing of 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide.

War between Israel and Hamas

May 1 - Turkish police arrests dozens of people in Istanbul as they attempt to organize a May Day rally.

May 5 - Talks started at the level of the foreign ministries between Egypt and Turkey.

May 10 - The last war started between Hamas and Israel, which ended on May 21, left 230 Palestinians dead and 12 Israelis dead

May 11 - The candidacy door opens for the Iranian presidential elections.

May 23 - Tehran announcesend of the interim nuclear monitoring agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Raisi comes to power in Iran

June 2 - The Israeli parliament elects Isaac Herzog as president.

June 13 - The Israeli Knesset grants confidence to the coalition government led by Naftali Bennett, ending the Netanyahu era.

June 16 - The first summit between US President Joe Biden and Russia's Vladimir Putin in Geneva.

June 18 - The United Nations confirms that the number of people fleeing war, violence, persecution and human rights violations in 2020 has risen to nearly 82.4 million.

June 19 - The conservative Ebrahim Raisi wins Iran's presidential election.

June 23 - The "Berlin 2" conference on Libya was held in Germany, which stressed on exit of mercenaries and holding of elections on time.

June 27 - Opponents of the "Tigray Liberation Front" declare their complete control of the provincial capital "Mekli" and expel government forces

June 29 - Protests in several Lebanese regions due to the government's hike in fuel prices.

Hariri apologizes for forming the Lebanese government, and Saeed ousts the Ennahda movement.

July 1 - Demonstrations demand the resignation of the Sudanese government.

July 6 - Ethiopia informs Egypt of the start of the second phase of filling the lake of the Renaissance Dam, and announced its completion on July 19.

July 15 - Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri announced his apology for forming a new government in Lebanon.

July 25 - Tunisian President Kais Saied dismisses the prime minister, freezes parliament's powers, and assumes executive authority for a month. On August 24, he extended the suspension decision "until further notice."

July 26 - Lebanese President Michel Aoun assigns Najib Mikati the task of forming a government.

July 30 - The coastal road between eastern and western Libya is officially opened.

Taliban controls Afghanistan

August 15 - The Afghan capital falls to the Taliban after the Afghan president fled the country.

August 31 - The last US soldier withdrew from Kabul airport.

Fall of the Brotherhood in Morocco and Turkey's warning against buying a second batch of Russian S-400s

September 7 - Illegal immigration escalates which is organized by the Belarusian president, accused of trying to blackmail the European Union into repealing sanctions he imposed over his disputed re-election and cracking down on dissent.

September 9 - The results of the Moroccan parliamentary elections revealed the resounding fall of the Justice and Development Party (the ruling Brotherhood).

September 13 - The High Commissioner for Human Rights considers that environmental threats from pollution and climate change will lead to and deepen conflicts around the world.

September 20 - American and European calls to ban the Turkish Gray Wolves group and classify it as a terrorist organization, after France banned it.

September 21 - World leaders gather for the 76th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

September 26 - Washington warns Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against buying a second batch of Russian S-400 missiles.

September 26 - The Social Democratic Party wins the parliamentary elections in Germany. Elections in Iraq and Turkey fail in its bid to join the European Union October 1 - Democratic and Republican senators call on President Biden to hold Recep Erdogan accountable for Turkish efforts to disenfranchise the Kurds, undermine the country's political pluralism, and consolidate his power in undemocratic ways.

October 5 - The Libyan House of Representatives approves the legislative elections law scheduled for December 24.

October 10 - Iraqis begin to vote in legislative elections, and the government has not yet been formed. October 21 - Turkey fails again in its bid to join the European Union.

October 25 - A military coup in Sudan and the President of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announces the dissolution of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and the Council of Ministers, declaring a state of emergency in the country, and besieging the home of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, and placing him under house arrest.

October 25 - A conference was held in Austria on combating political Islam currents, including the "Brotherhood", with the participation of a large number of officials and specialists from various European countries. During the conference, a European coordinator was appointed specialized in this file. The situation worsened on the Russian-Ukrainian border, and Al-Kazemi survived an assassination attempt

November 7 - Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi survives an "assassination attempt" by a "exploded drone" that targeted his residence in Baghdad.

November 8 - The door for candidacy opens for the presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya.

November 13 - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia has nearly 100,000 soldiers near his country's borders, at a time when the crisis between Russia and the West intensified against the backdrop of the Ukrainian crisis and America and the West talked about Moscow's intention to invade Ukraine.

November 19 - Britain announces the ban of the entire "Hamas" movement in the United Kingdom.

November 20 - The "Ansar Allah" Houthi group announces that it has carried out a "widespread military operation in the depths of Saudi Arabia", against the background of the escalation of fighting on various fronts of the conflict in Yemen.

Council of Europe issues disciplinary action against Turkey

December 3 - The Council of Europe issues a disciplinary measure against Turkey, for its refusal to release the opponent Osman Kavala, in light of mounting concern about human rights violations in Turkey.

 

December 6 - A meeting between the UAE and Iran in a rare diplomatic step.

December 7 - The US President and the Russian President held a rare summit via video link on the Ukraine crisis.

December 9 - The Iraqi National Security Adviser, Qassem al-Araji, officially announces the end of the combat missions of the coalition forces that began seven years ago to fight ISIS.

December 11 - NATO Secretary General rejects Russia's request to rescind NATO's 2008 decision to allow Georgia and Ukraine to join the alliance.

December 13 - The Turkish lira reaches its lowest level this year, recording 14.75 liras against the dollar.

December 14 - The 42nd Gulf Summit was held at Diriyah Palace in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
