Water Forum in NE, Syria we will follow up in solving crisis and solutions water  

Yesterday evening, the work of the International Forum concluded after two consecutive days of interactive sessions and extensive discussions on the reality of water in NE, Syria, the suffering of the people and the means of resolution, with the participation of more than 300 personalities and delegates from international organizations working in the region and beyond, the AANES institutions and environmental experts and academics.

The forum was sponsored by the Local Administration and Environment Body of Jazirah region, along with the University of Rojava and the Euphrates Centre for Studies, to highlight the reality of water security in the region. Commenting on the past two days of the Forum and its achievements, ANHA agency met with the member of the Preparatory Committee, Walid Jolie.

At the outset, Jolie said: "The objective of the International Conference on Water in the Region is to highlight the reality of water in the north and east of Syria and the region, so the focus was on bringing together international organizations and personalities, and academics interested in water, ecology and nature."

Jolie noted that the importance of water was explained scientifically, and international agreements on water between the three countries (Iraq, Syria and Turkey), through the axes.

He said: "The forum centered on the Turkish state's transgressions of international agreements, the suffering of 5 million people in the region as a result of the water war aimed at the displacement of the people, as well as the level of the Euphrates River and the comparison of its present with the past."

Jolie added: "All aspects of water and its dimensions, political, economic and social, were discussed, and Forum participants reached a number of conclusions and recommendations, formulated as final recommendations and conclusions of the International Water Forum in North and East Syria."
Jolie noted that the participants, together with the conclusions and recommendations, had established a committee that had emerged from the Forum to follow up on the findings and recommendations with the parties and concerned parties, which would contribute to the political and legal resolution of the water security crisis in the region, composed of international and local organizations, civil society institutions, academics and experts in environmental and water science. "

On the obstacles to holding the Forum, Jolie said: "The most important obstacle has been the siege imposed on NE, Syria, which has prevented the arrival of dozens of academics, delegates of international organizations, representatives of Egypt and Iraq, and other international organizations, as well as the outbreak of COVID19."
Jolie explained that their participation was limited only to the video app "ZOOM," due to their inability to reach NE, Syria.

The member of the Preparatory Committee, Walid Jolie, stressed that, despite these constraints, he had attended the International Water Forum in North and East Syria, nearly 100 international and humanitarian organizations at home and abroad.

In concluding his statement, ANHA noted that the Forum had achieved its goal of highlighting the reality of water security in the north and east of Syria, the crisis created by the Turkish occupation through its blocking of the water of the Euphrates River, its intention to cut off fresh water on Hasakah canton and its people. It also explained the reality of the crisis to the organizations, in its turn, to assume their responsibilities in putting pressure on Turkey and in place support for the region to avoid a humanitarian disaster.
