Iran and Turkey cause Tigris and Euphrates levels to drop to 50%

The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rasheed, announced today, Sunday, that water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have declined by half, indicating that this will cause problems in the future.

Rasheed said in a press conference at the ministry's headquarters that "water amounts coming from Turkey to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers decreased by 50 %."

And he indicated that "the tributaries of the Darbandikhan Dam, their imports reached zero percent, while the imports of the Zab Al-adna decreased by 70 percent."

He pointed out that "news we received about Iran diverting some tributaries into Iran, including the Sirwan River and some of the waters of the Diyala tributary," noting that "this information was confirmed by our technical supervision in the ministry and we felt that the matter exists."

He stressed that "this matter will generate a problem in the future, not at the present time, and we have asked Iran to hold a meeting with it on this issue, but without a response."
