The investigation by United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da'esh/ISIL (UNITADrevealed that ISIS had tested biological weapons against prisoners in Iraq, indicating that it had used chemical weapons against civilians between 2014 and 2016.

The investigation pointed out that the crimes of ISIS mercenaries against the Yazidis in Iraq amount to war crimes and genocide, revealing that 875 ISIS victims have been identified in 11 mass graves, and 4 execution sites have been identified after the attack on the Badush prison in Nineveh.

According to the mission's website, a study is currently underway on how to "enhance accountability for ISIS crimes through collective action across international, local and non-governmental actors."
