OPCW suspends Syria's membership

On Wednesday, member states of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) stripped Syria of their right to vote in the organization after it turned out that its forces had used toxic gases repeatedly during the civil war, according to Reuters.

The majority of countries that voted in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) supported a decision to immediately revoke Syria's concessions in the organization.

The move to strip Syria of its "rights and privileges" was supported by 87 member states of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The reprimand means that Syria will lose its voting rights in the oversight body but will still be able to speak at the meetings.

France initially put forward the proposal to punish Syria, as the Paris envoy to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said, "We owe that to the Syrian people."

An investigation by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons last year said there were reasonable grounds to believe that the Syrian army attacked the village of Al-Lataminah with sarin and chlorine attacks in 2017.
