Biden and Putin discuss relations, various regional, global issues

The White House announced today that US President Joe Biden made a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed closely the relations between the two countries and various regional and global issues, in addition to the two countries' intentions to conduct a dialogue on strategic stability.

In a statement issued by the White House, the two presidents discussed "many regional and global issues, including the intention of the United States and Russia to continue the dialogue on strategic stability."

The statement indicated that this dialogue should include "issues related to arms control and new problems in the field of security."

The statement indicated that the US President expressed to Putin the US concern about "the sudden build-up of Russian military forces in occupied Crimea and on the borders of Ukraine, and called on Russia to prevent tension," adding that Biden renewed "the strong US support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The statement also said that Biden referred to "Russian interference" in the American elections and hacker attacks against American institutions, as he made clear that the United States "would be firm in defending its national interests in response to Russia's moves such as cyber attacks and interference in the elections."

The White House also stated that the US President affirmed his aspiration to "build stable and clear relations with Russia that are consistent with the interests of the United States. He also proposed holding a summit meeting in a third country in the coming months to discuss all outstanding issues between the United States and Russia."
