Women's political rights in international conventions discussed in seminar in Qamishlo

With the aim of enabling women politically and legally, the Party for Modernity and Democracy for Syria organized a symposium entitled "Political Rights of Women in International Instruments" at its headquarters in Qamishlo.

The seminar was participated by Haifa Mahmoud, the woman in charge of the women's file in the Democratic Modernity Party, members and administrators of political parties in north and east Syria.

The symposium included three axes: "CEDAW, international treaties in terms of legal protection, and an explanation of Resolution 1325."

Haifa Mahmoud referred at the beginning of the symposium to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and said: “In its Article I, it guarantees that every person has the right to enjoy all the rights and freedoms contained in this declaration without any discrimination between the two genders. In Article XX, it grants every person the rights of freedom and participation in healthy associations, while it affirmed in Article VI of the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam and the equality between women and men."

Haifa continued her speech by referring to the special agreements of international treaties, and said: "This convention was bound in Article III of states to agree to it by ensuring equality between men and women in political rights, and in Article XXII, it guaranteed the right to run for and vote without any discrimination between them."

CEDAW

In her speech, Haifa defined the CEDAW agreement, saying: "It is considered one of the important conventions that represent the completion of women's issues, which constitute the description of the totality of humanity and the core of issues that address human rights concerns, and affirm the dignity and worth of the individual; men and women with equal rights.

It is an international convention adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979, and the convention has been described as an international charter for women's rights and has been ratified by 180 countries.

Law Articles

Haifa outlined some of the CEDAW articles, which contain 30 articles in women's rights, and said: "One of those articles is equality between men and women in human rights, basic freedoms in the political, economic and social fields, establishing legal protection on an equal basis with men, and ensuring effective protection for women through national courts of jurisdiction and other public institutions."

In addition to this, Haifa explained that it is a law that affirms that state parties in all fields, especially the political, social, economic and cultural fields take appropriate measures, including legislation and the development and advancement of women, in order for them to exercise and enjoy their rights and fundamental freedoms on the basis of equality between men and women.

She continued, "There is an article that includes states parties taking all appropriate measures to ensure that women have the opportunity to represent their government at the international level, and to participate in the work of international organizations on an equal basis with men and without any discrimination."

There were interventions and discussions by the attendees on these articles, confirming that this law is not effectively applied in the regions of Syria, explaining also that after the outbreak of the revolution in north and east Syria and the establishment of the Autonomous Administration, women obtained most of their rights and laws within the region.

At the end of the seminar, Haifa Mahmoud explained to the attendees some of the points of Resolution 1325, and said: "Among the most prominent of these points are the participation of women at all levels of decision-making, the protection of women and girls, and the work to prevent violence against women."
