The US Navy said that among the weapons seized by the guided missile destroyer "Winston S. Churchill" in the Indian Ocean last week, thousands of "Kalashnikov" rifles, light machine guns, heavy sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and others.

In its statement, the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, did not specify the source of the smuggled weapons and did not reveal their destination.

However, a US defense official who spoke with the Associated Press, on condition of anonymity, said that there are "some indications" that the weapons were destined for Yemen via the Gulf of Aden, and the official added that the American authorities are continuing the investigation.
