The sources told Al Arabiya that Russia obstructed the negotiations that took place to reach a joint statement yesterday.

For their part, the members of the European Union in the Security Council considered that the lack of progress in the meetings of the so-called Constitutional Committee was regrettable, and said, "We regret the Syrian regime's continued obstruction of the political process."

European members of the Security Council also stressed that the EU countries will not recognize elections that do not comply with UN Resolution 2254.

The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called on the international community to overcome its divisions to revive the stalled political process, according to what diplomatic sources said to "Agence France Presse" on Wednesday.
