CAIRO – AMANI AZZAM

This came during an interview with ANHA with the writer and managing editor of the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, Ashraf Abu Al-Houl, about the reconciliation of the Quartet countries with Qatar, and the possible scenarios if Qatar does not comply with the terms of the agreement.

Egyptian journalist said that ruling on the period of success or failure of the reconciliation agreement between the Arab quartet; Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and Bahrain with Qatar, during the "Al-Ula" summit in Saudi Arabia on January 5, can't be so fast for two reasons.

'Basic conditions that Qatar must fulfil'

He added: "Firstly, there are basic conditions that need time to be fulfilled, such as reducing the level of relations with Iran and Turkey and keeping the Muslim Brotherhood away from centers of influence and Qatari media. Secondly, Egypt or the UAE have previous experiences with Qatar in the issue of retreating from the implementation of agreements, and therefore it is imperative to rebuild trust with Doha.

With regard to the possibility of reviewing Qatar's level of relations with both Iran and Turkey, Ashraf Abul-Houl indicated that the matter is very likely, especially since there is a clear escalation between Washington and both Tehran and Ankara, under the Trump administration and Biden alike.

The editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram newspaper affirmed that America will not accept the continuation of Doha's close relations with the two countries, especially Iran, which has benefited economically from the Arab quartet's boycott of Doha, noting that any American administration will not accept that there is a noticeable Iranian presence in a country that includes its largest military bases, Al-Udeidah base. Therefore, it is expected that Doha is going to reduce the level of its economic relations with Tehran, especially with the reopening of the airspace and the land borders with Saudi Arabia. The Turkish military presence in Qatar will also be reduced as well as the support to the Turkish economy.

'Deporting the Brotherhood from Qatari lands'

He expected that Doha would gradually work to expel the Brotherhood from its lands, due to its desire to maintain reconciliation with the Arab quartet, especially with the organization of the FIFA World Cup at the end of 2022, which it wants to emerge in its best form.

The Egyptian journalist and managing editor of the newspaper, Ashraf Abu al-Houl, suggested that there is a great possibility that the quartet countries have abandoned some of their conditions, especially with regard to the closure of the Al-Jazeera channel, in return to stop its hostile campaigns in the internal affairs of the countries of the quartet and merge some other conditions or implement them over a period of time. Therefore, the details of the reconciliation agreement have not been released yet.
