"The United States will withdraw more than a third of its forces from Iraq within weeks, in consultation and coordination with the Iraqi government and our coalition partners," said the commander of the US Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, according to CNN.

General Kenneth Mackenzie explained to reporters that the troop presence would decrease from about 5,200 to 3,000 during September.

"The rest will continue to advise and assist the Iraqi Security Forces in eradicating the last remnants of ISIS in Iraq and ensuring their permanent defeat," McKinsey added.

"This low impact allows us to continue providing advice and assistance to our Iraqi partners in eradicating the last remnants of ISIS in Iraq and ensuring its permanent defeat, and this decision is due to our confidence in increasing the ability of the Iraqi security forces to operate independently."

A senior US administration official said, according to Reuters, that US President Donald Trump will announce today that he will withdraw more of his country's forces from Iraq.
