Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehmer said: "Turkey should not have any influence in Europe, we will not accept any Turkish attempt to influence our basic principles," and expressed Austria's suspicions "about the activities of Turkish intelligence in the country."

The Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg called earlier on the European Union "to reassess its relations with Turkey, in light of the recent series of events, referring to particular concern about the situation in the eastern Mediterranean."

"I must say that Austria is extremely concerned about the dangerous situation that we think may escalate," Schallenberg said in a joint press conference with visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He added, "The measures taken by certain countries in the eastern Mediterranean should push the European Union to re-evaluate its relations with Turkey."
