European official: Turkey is on sanctions table tomorrow

A meeting of European Union foreign ministers is scheduled to be held in Berlin on 27-28 August, during which Borrell will present options for the European Union to deal with Turkey in general, and include the illegal exploration of Turkey for gas in the eastern Mediterranean, in addition to immigration, and Ankara's intervention in Libya and Syria.

He added that the meeting will discuss imposing sanctions on Turkish legal personalities and entities.

In turn, Athens demanded the imposition of sanctions on the Turkish banking sector, and the official emphasized that the options proposed by the executive authority would be "massive sanctions."

The official stressed that the European Union had previously reduced the accession aid allocated to Turkey, adding that one of the member states demanded the withdrawal of Turkey's EU membership file from circulation.

The media network specialized in European Union policies indicated that a final decision is not expected in Berlin, but discussions will be in-depth, indicating that the visit of German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to Athens and Ankara on Tuesday did not produce any tangible results.

An EU official stated that any dialogue with Turkey will take place on one condition: that Ankara stops any illegal activity in the eastern Mediterranean.

And French MP Nathalie Loiseau described last month that relations between the European Union and Turkey had reached a dead end.
