Tunisia ... government excludes political parties and relies on "technocrats"

The Tunisian Prime Minister-designate, Hisham El-Mechichi, announced, on Monday, his new ministerial formation, and pledged to work with complete independence, stressing that his new government will remain in direct interaction with all the political spectra in Tunisia, to benefit from the perceptions and visions provided by the parties, on public issues.

Al-Mechichi affirmed his intention to work on resolving the outstanding economic and social issues, moving away from political parties in his ministerial formation, which is awaiting approval by the House of Representatives, from political parties, describing his government as consisting of independent competencies.

The formation of the new government in Tunisia, which has distanced itself from the parties, came about a month after Hicham El Mechichi was assigned to lead it.

"After a series of consultations with parties and parliamentary blocs ... and after assessing the economic, political and social situation, I came to the conclusion of the necessity to think of a government of independent competencies that would focus on the economic and social situation and the entitlements of Tunisians," Al-Mechichi said in a press conference.
