Jeffrey: Any country violates sanctions, to be sanctioned

"We are not sending messages to Bashar al-Assad, we are working with Russia to implement Security Council resolution 2254," said Jeffrey.

"We want to see the ceasefire, the start of transparent elections, writing of a new constitution and the return of refugees," he said.

The US envoy stressed that Washington was working on a diplomatic solution to reach a political solution to end the crisis in Syria, and continued, "We did not resort to the military option."

He said, "Our European allies told us about the sanctions against the Syrian regime," noting that "any country that violates the sanctions will be subject to it, including the countries that host the Assad family."

The US envoy said that some sources in Russia show their doubts about Assad's ability to continue in power. Stressing that if the Lebanese government imports fuel from Syria, it will be subject to sanctions.

He added that Russia had persuaded the "al-Assad regime" to participate in writing the constitution, and these are positive signs.

He expressed his hope to find a solution to provide humanitarian aid in northeastern Syria, stressing that the suffering of the Syrian people is responsible for the "regime" and its allies.
