The Washington Post has reported that US President Donald Trump has spoken of Syria that there is only oil and sand in the country.

Russia confirmed its role in Syria's political future as the Moscow-backed Syrian Constitutional Committee met for the first time under UN auspices to draw up a political settlement to end the eight-and-a-half-year civil war.

The meeting - a key proposal from Moscow - is being supervised in Geneva by the UN special envoy to Syria, Non-Pederson, while observers believe that the Syrian government, in an increasingly strong military position, is unlikely to make any major political concessions to secure recognition western countries.
