Witnesses added, "The security forces fired tear gas heavily while they headed towards the sit-in on pickup trucks."

The protesters camped out for two nights outside the compound as part of an effort to increase pressure on the President Omar al-Bashir to step down after nearly 30 years in office.

Previous attempts by the security forces to disperse the protesters also failed as five people were killed in an attempt by the security forces to break up the demonstration which began on Friday in front of the Defense Ministry and the president's residence in the center of Khartoum.
