US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a joint news conference in Doha on Sunday with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani that Gulf countries face common challenges, saying that the unity is "important in the coming days."

He said ,"We believe that we are strong only when we work together."

Pompeo said the United States hopes to create a new strategic alliance that will include the six Gulf states as well as Egypt and Jordan.

The US Secretary of State said that the United States is working with Qatar to address many regional issues, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and expressed Washington's desire to develop cooperation with Doha, especially with the approach of the FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar in 2022.

The Trump administration has launched an initiative to create a new regional alliance in the Middle East to counter Iran's "malicious efforts".
